In November 2015, then Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, proposed new contracts for Junior Doctors which would scrap pay for overtime hours between 7am and 10pm on everyday except Sundays, but increase basic pay. The BMA union argued that this would give increase working hours with a relative pay cut of 40%. The BMA then balloted it's members, who overwhelmingly voted for industrial action.
